This dataset contains the Roads and Highways Road Network Linear Referencing System (LRS) HPMS terrain type event polyline feature class which identifies the predominant terrain type along Idaho’s public roadway segments as reported through the Highway Performance Monitoring System (HPMS). The data supports roadway design, performance modeling, and geometric evaluation.
<DIV STYLE="text-align:Left;"><DIV><DIV><P><SPAN>The Idaho Transportation Department's (ITD) Roads and Highways Road Network Linear Referencing System (LRS) HPMS terrain type event polyline feature class classifies roadway segments according to the general topography of the surrounding landscape, which influences vehicle speed, design standards, and operational characteristics. Terrain type reflects the overall slope and grade of the roadway corridor, not isolated features. </SPAN></P><P><SPAN>This dataset helps determine appropriate design criteria, such as horizontal and vertical alignment, and is used in performance modeling and cost estimation. Data are reviewed and updated annually as part of ITD’s Highway Performance Monitoring System (HPMS) submittal to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).</SPAN></P></DIV></DIV></DIV>

The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) implemented ArcGIS Roads and Highways in 2018, which is a Linear Referencing System (LRS) that manages road and highway data. It uses a data model with feature classes for routes, centerlines, and events to store and maintain roadway information, enabling accurate location management and analysis.
The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) first implemented a Linear Referencing System (LRS) for managing road data in the 1970s, which was a mainframe-based system called the Milepoint and Coded Segment System (MACS System). In 2012, the LRS was migrated off the mainframe to Network Manager (NetMan). And finally in 2018, the LRS migrated to ArcGIS Roads and Highways. Editing stopped in NetMan in early 2017 for the migration to Roads and Highways, which is why the earliest "From Dates" on the data layers is 02/07/2017.
